Barva je kvalita (subjektivního) vjemu elektromagnetického záření konkrétní vlnové délky nebo součtu různých záření dopadajících na sítnici oka (v rámci zrakovým systémem vnímatelného spektra), který je vytvořen zrakovým centrem mozku. Vlnová délka záření je ovlivněna buď charakterem zdroje záření, nebo charakterem odrazové plochy, nebo charakterem průsvitného prostředí, kterým prochází, případně kombinovaně více faktory. Živočichové s odlišným zrakovým ústrojím mají předpokládaně jiný typ vjemů.
Barvou se zabývají vědecké teorie chemická, fyzikální, fyziologická, kognitivně-psychologická, estetická a také teorie komunikace.

Color is the quality of the (subjective) perception of electromagnetic radiation of a specific wavelength or the sum of various radiations falling on the retina of the eye (within the visual system of the perceptible spectrum), which is created by the visual center of the brain. The wavelength of radiation is influenced either by the nature of the radiation source, or by the nature of the reflecting surface, or by the nature of the translucent environment through which it passes, or by a combination of several factors. Animals with different visual systems presumably have different types of perceptions.
Scientific theories dealing with color include chemical, physical, physiological, cognitive-psychological, aesthetic, and also communication theories.
